Not to be wise about it, but they're called landing pages because the user lands on them.
We use the airfield analogy. An airplane could possibly land on a spacious parking lot, highway, or flat desert. But are those preferred landing places? Are they optimal?
No. The optimal place to land is a landing strip. A place designed exactly for this purpose.
And so for search engine marketers - the optimal place for users to land is a landing page...
